Owing to the growing imbalance between demand and supply of electricity in the region, coupled with challenges of climate change, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and other regional policies and frameworks promote the use of renewable energy technologies to meet the energy deficit, provide access to clean energy and mitigate climate change’s adverse effects. The course aims to give a firm foundation of renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, hydro, bio-energy, and their conversion technologies. It also introduces meteorological data measurements and analysis for renewable energy resource assessment. Computer simulations of renewable energy technologies and hybrid systems for electricity generation are also introduced. It also outlines issues affecting the implementation of sustainable energy technologies and highlights the potential benefits / contribution of renewable energy to the energy sector and explains why renewable energy should be promoted.
