Seeing the World, Rethinking Home: A NUL-ERC Exchange Story

What does it mean for an engineering student to move from theory into real-world exposure?

Through the Energy Research Centre (ERC) at the National University of Lesotho (NUL), two undergraduate students in Electronics and Computer Engineering — Pusetso Mapola and Ncgabe Thabana — are currently on exchange at FH JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences in Austria.

While academic learning remains central, the value of this experience is equally professional.

It is about developing the skills that shape engineers beyond technical knowledge:

  • Adapting to new environments and systems
  • Navigating cultural and institutional differences
  • Building confidence in unfamiliar settings
  • Managing time, expectations, and independence
  • Communicating across language barriers

These are the competencies that define not just graduates — but professionals.

As one student shared:

“I used to understand the world through diagrams, videos, and imagination. Now I’m experiencing it — and it changes how I see Lesotho, with hope and new ideas for what’s possible.”

This kind of exposure reshapes how future engineers think about systems, challenges, and solutions.

It builds perspective.
It strengthens adaptability.
It expands the scope of what is considered possible.

At the Energy Research Centre, supporting student exchange is part of a broader commitment — not only to academic excellence, but to preparing graduates who can operate confidently in both local and global contexts.

Because ultimately, professional development is not only about what you know —
but how you apply it, where you apply it, and how you grow through the experience.
